Writers Beyond Borders Reports

STEERING COMMITTEE

The Steering Committee had its first meeting on April 25th, with six delegates of the seven projects currently active. If you would like read the minutes, please send an email to info@writersbeyondborders.ca. Besides the committee reports, we discussed the creation of a logo for our organization and Adonay Guerrero agreed to help us out. Thank you Adonay! We would also like to compile a database that would be very helpful to our members when looking at network with other writers.

ALTERNATIVE TRENDS MAGAZINE`

Alternative Trends magazine is donating a page to publish the works of Writers Beyond Borders' members. You received an email recently with information on how you can have your words profiled in the summer issue. There is still time to submit your work, the deadline is May 22nd! Please email your submission to info@writersbeyondborders.ca. Alternative Trends magazine is also available on line @ www.alternativetrends.com.

GET PUBLISHED!

The committee is working on strategies to help WBB members to get published and came up with the following three steps to take. 1) Prepare a product worthy to be published, 2) Find a publisher that might be interested in a long-lasting collaboration with WBB, and 3) Draft a mutually beneficial contract that may be offered to interested publishers. If you would like more information on the steps mentioned above or would like to join this project, contact Edward Porper @ sherlok7@gmail.com.

THEMATIC MEETINGS

This project is active now and the committee is working on organizing a creative writing course for ESL writers. More information is to follow on this exciting opportunity. If you are interested to join this committee, please contact Rita Espeschit @ espechit@telus.net.

WEBSITE

The Writers Beyond Borders website, www.writersbeyondborders.ca is continuously updated! It is a great place to have your profile posted. Send us information that you want to be on your profile, such as a brief biography and a picture. Also, if you have a personal website or blog please send us the link. Please contact Argelia Gonzalez at argelia@ualberta.ca.

WRITING GROUPS

The Writing Groups Project has, so far, accomplished its first intent, which was the creation of at least one writing group with members of WBB. It has 10 members enlisted to write and a few others that manifested interest but didn't enlist. The writing group, in terms of numbers is encouraging, but participation and level of interest are still to be confirmed. Writing groups are challenging and can be an enriching experience, but there are many difficulties to be overcome. The group is dealing with difficulties related to level of interest and commitment, acceptance of critique, passive and active silence, distrust, text ownership and originality, and other impairing factors. In our fourth meeting, May 12th, the group discussed some of these questions. It may be necessary to break it into other groups or sub-groups based on some criteria set, in order to attain more participation, which is basically writing activity and exchanging of comments and feedback. The next meeting is on June 9th. Contact the project initiator for details - mflecha@telus.net.
